PDF to PNG Converter

Quality

Converted right in your browser. Your file is never uploaded. Large PDFs may be slow on phones.

How it works

  1. Choose or drop a PDF. Only then does the page load pdf.js, the open-source PDF renderer, from this site.
  2. pdf.js draws every page on your device at the quality you picked, 1x or 2x.
  3. Each page appears as a preview with its size and its own Download PNG button.
  4. Download all (ZIP) loads JSZip from this site and packs every page into one ZIP file, named by page number.

When a PNG is the right format

A PNG keeps sharp edges and flat colours without the blur that JPEG compression adds around text and lines, so it suits pages with writing, diagrams, charts, screenshots and slides. Typical uses are pasting a page into a presentation or document, posting a single page where PDFs are not accepted, adding a figure to a web page or a support ticket, or keeping an image of a signed page.

For scanned photos, a PNG file is usually larger than a JPEG of the same page. If file size matters more than crisp text, pick 1x or compress the images afterwards.

Picking the quality

The 2x setting, the default, renders each page at 144 pixels per inch. Text stays readable when you zoom in and the images print reasonably at small sizes. The 1x setting renders at 72 pixels per inch, the PDF's own point size, which gives smaller files and a faster result, good for thumbnails and quick previews. Changing the setting after choosing a file renders the pages again.

Large PDFs and phones

Every page is drawn in your device's memory. A long document, big page sizes or the 2x setting can make the conversion slow on a phone, and a very large file may not finish there. Pages appear one by one with a progress line, so you can save the first pages while the rest are still rendering. If one page fails, the converter tells you which page it was and keeps going with the others.

Privacy

The converter is a static page. Your file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded. The PDF is opened with the browser's file reader and rendered in memory on your phone or computer, and nothing is kept after you close the tab. The two libraries it uses, pdf.js and JSZip, are served from this site.

Need the text instead of images?

A PNG is a picture of the page, so the text in it cannot be selected or searched. If you want to read a text PDF on an e-reader, use the PDF to EPUB converter, which extracts the text into an e-book.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and rendered inside your browser. When you choose a PDF, the page loads the open-source pdf.js library from this site, and when you press Download all (ZIP) it loads JSZip from this site too; your PDF itself is not sent anywhere.

What resolution are the PNG images?

At 1x each page is rendered at the PDF's own page size, one pixel per PDF point, which is 72 pixels per inch: a US Letter page becomes 612 × 792 pixels. At 2x, the default, width and height are doubled (144 pixels per inch), so a Letter page becomes 1224 × 1584 pixels. The exact size of every page is shown under its preview.

Should I choose 1x or 2x?

Use 2x for text you want to read or print, slides and anything you will zoom into. Use 1x for small previews, thumbnails or when the PDF has many pages and you need smaller files and a faster result. You can switch the setting after choosing a file and the pages are rendered again.

Can I convert only some pages?

Every page is converted, and each preview has its own Download PNG button, so you can save just the pages you need. Download all (ZIP) puts every converted page into one ZIP file, named with the page number.

Why does a page look different from my PDF viewer?

Fonts that are not embedded in the PDF are replaced with similar fonts available to your browser, so spacing can shift slightly. Rare PDF features may also render differently. If a page cannot be rendered at all, the converter names that page and still converts the others. A damaged page can also come out blank with no error message, so check the previews before you download.

Is the background transparent?

No. Pages are rendered on a white background, the way they look on paper, so text stays readable in any image viewer.

Can it convert password-protected PDFs?

No. If the PDF needs a password to open, remove the protection first and then convert it.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but everything happens in your device's memory. Large PDFs, many pages or the 2x setting can be slow on phones, and very large files may not finish there; a computer handles them better.

Does it need an internet connection?

Only to load this page, pdf.js when you choose a file and JSZip if you download a ZIP, all from this site. Rendering happens on your device, and your PDF is never sent over the network.
